[Replay now available] This event was held on 10 June 2026 in Brussels, hosted by the National Bank of Belgium. The conference video, pictures and introductory speech are available below.
Event description
In this defining era, financing European strategic objectives has become critical. As geopolitical risks increase, Europe’s need for investment has never been greater. A resilient financial system is pivotal for serving the real economy and citizens alike.
For its 15th anniversary, Finance Watch brought together top policymakers and experts to discuss the role of financial regulation in financing a resilient, thriving Europe. Our high level panel and distinguished speakers debated the critical issues we are faced with:
- How can financial regulation encourage more financing for Europe’s productive economy?
- How can investments be channeled towards the continent’s strategic objectives?
- How can the rules for banks and non-banks be strengthened and simplified in a competitive and uncertain world?
The Finance Watch conference on 10 June 2026 was a unique opportunity to hear from those who make the rules of the financial system in Europe.
The programme included:
- An opening address by Isabelle Buscke, Secretary General of Finance Watch
- A keynote speech by Géraldine Thiry, Director at the National Bank of Belgium.
- A high-level panel on financial regulation and strategic autonomy with Verena Ross, Chair of the European Securities and Markets Authority, Jonás Fernández, Member of the European Parliament and S&D ECON Committee Coordinator, and Rebecca Christie, Senior Fellow at Bruegel.
- A fireside chat with Maria Luís Albuquerque, Commissioner for Financial Services and the Savings and Investments Union.
- A networking reception.
